In a special collaboration between Highered and Audencia Business School, career consultant and former headhunter Anne-Sophie Berthelot shared a comprehensive guide to navigating the modern recruitment landscape and tips to mastering the interview skills.

Here are the top five takeaways from the session:
1. The Phone Interview Sets the Tone
Don’t underestimate the initial screening call. It is your only chance to make a first impression. Berthelot’s advice is to “smile when you dial” because enthusiasm translates through voice. If caught at a bad time, reschedule so you can be in a quiet environment with your CV in front of you.
2. Virtual Professionalism
For video interviews, control your environment. Ensure a neutral background (no distracting messy rooms or “swimming pools”) and dress as you would for an in-person meeting. Eye contact with the camera is crucial for building a connection.
3. Structure Your Stories (The STAR Method)
When answering behavioral questions like “Tell me about a time you faced a challenge,” avoid rambling. Berthelot recommends using the STAR method to keep answers concise and impact-focused.
4. Think “Package,” Not Just Salary
When discussing compensation, distinguish between expectations (discussed early) and negotiation (discussed after an offer). Do not fixate solely on the monthly paycheck; evaluate the Total Rewards Package, including bonuses, benefits, and company culture.
5. The Power of the Follow-Up
The process isn’t over when the camera turns off. Send a personalized Thank You email within 24 hours, reiterating your motivation and referencing specific points discussed. Always ask for the timeline at the end of the interview so you know exactly when it is appropriate to follow up.
