Last year made us resort to big changes and revisit many aspects of work. This meant going remote, reaching out for new digital resources, virtual recruitment, as well as reestablishing essential needs. Bigger questions keep arising – how do we keep improving the market as employers? What is the future of employment?

Responsible Management

With great power comes great responsibility, right? For employers, this is especially relevant to hiring young professionals and graduates. You are responsible for their first exposure to the job market. Paying more attention to their experience at your company will not only be beneficial to you but to the whole ecosystem.

Let’s face the facts – chances are they won’t stay with you. However, educating them, providing the right training and exposing them to modern forms of management improves the whole market and meets the needs of the society. One thing that 2020 may have taught us globally is that we must come together (distancing, but still) – this is no less relevant for our ecosystems.

Remote Work

Did you know that 72% of workers would like to keep working remotely for at least 2 days a week? If you are still skeptical about remote work, let’s look at some more numbers – employees who work outside of the office for 4 or 5 days a week show the highest engagement. Let’s use it to our advantage!

These statistics show that employees are motivated to work wherever they feel comfortable, but there’s still a lot of work to be done about how we actually perceive and execute remote work. In many cases, the hassle of sudden, unprecedented change made employers resort to merely copying the same mechanisms and adopting them to new standards. It goes without saying that micromanagement and spying on employees is a big “no”. But how about endless Zoom meetings? How should we raise morale and do team building?

Slash Careers

Hardships experienced in 2020 forced many employees to look for additional income. For some, this meant using hobbies and abilities to start their own small businesses, for others – exploring opportunities in completely new industries. These talent are the future of employment.

Creativity and innovation are at the heart of our future success – we need to recognize those skills in recruitment. This doesn’t necessarily mean hiring only artistically skilled workers but rather those who show the ability to creatively implement ideas.

This generation of students and graduates is well equipped with that skill. First of all, they are already aware they need to “think outside the box”, possess various skills to adapt to different circumstances and land a job. Highered’s Pitch Perfect Challenge is a great example of that fact. However, young professionals are also shaped by social media. They are used to using creativity and innovation to implement ideas, and they are doing it perfectly.

Let’s reward creative thinkers – use their skills so they tell us what to do instead of closing them in cubicle-shaped cages, and let’s build a better future of employment.
